Digital photography and processing has now changed all of that.
With modern software programs and ink jet printers, effects and prints that in the past used chemistry and took much time and skill, can be produced very quickly.
Cost also, is no longer the important factor that it was in the pre-digital age of photography. Hundreds of shots can be taken and stored on digital media for negligible cost. Those that are not required can be quickly deleted. Using film and silver halide coated photographic paper involved a much more significant cost, and in order not to be wasteful, photographers needed more skills in framing and composition. Older cameras also did not have automatic focussing and other controls that most modern cameras have, other photographic skills were obviously required here.
Why then do many of the world’s great photographers still use film?
Well, I don’t plan to go into details of photographers’ choice of equipment on this site, but I do however have a discussion on the pros and cons of silver halide prints versus ink-jet prints on the page Old & New Technology on this site.
The good news is that technology is now available to convert digital media into different light intensities that can be printed on light sensitive silver halide coated paper. The not-so-good news is the machines using this technology currently cost in the vicinity of $200,000.00, and are obviously not in common use because of their price tag.
However, I have access to one of these modern machines. More details are on the Old & New Technology page.
